DMRT is made up of keen
walkers and climbers, even so, the team meets at least once a month
to train together in rescue and search techniques. In summer this
can include long days practising stretcher lowering or gorge rescue
and in winter a typical training session can include avalanche
search and rescue or digging emergency snow shelters. A number of
training sessions every year involve helicopter lifts to remote
locations as many rescues involve close cooperation with the RAF or
Coastguard helicopter crews who winch DMRT volunteers into remote
corries or pick up casualties when located. Team members are also
sent on intensive training courses in mountaineering and rescue
techniques.
Every year local Duke of Edinburgh candidates
join DMRT for mountain rescue training as part of their community
service. Over the years several of these candidates have gone on to
become full team members.
